Chairman of the Cooperation Committee,
Stop TB Partnership
KOREA
Stop
TB Partnership campaign for a tuberculosis-free
world, your participation is highly encouraged.
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that represents severance
and poverty. In order to tackle this infectious disease
effectively, ‘Solidarity’ and ‘Cooperation’ are the most
significantly required spirits. The Stop TB Partnership is an
international cooperative and collegial entity having for its aim
to eradicate tuberculosis, a severe global disease.
The Stop TB Partnership, founded and hosted by the World Health
Organization (WHO) in 2001, is an international organization to
combat tuberculosis in cooperation with the United Nations
Project and Procurement Organization (UNOPS). Today, as the world
is a community, the importance of cooperation between countries
has been increasing to successfully combat the global epidemic of
tuberculosis, a disease without borders.
In this
regard, the Stop TB Partnership has strongly recommended that its
partner countries establish and operate a national Stop TB
Partnership Secretariat at a country level. As a result, 27
national Stop TB Partnership Secretariats have been instituted
all around the world, including the United States, Japan, Canada,
and Italy. In 2008. the Korean government also announced its plan
to establish and operate a national Stop TB Partnership
Secretariat, and the Stop TB Partnership KOREA, founded in
consequence of the plan, has been playing a pivotal role in
eradicating tuberculosis since 2010.
Over the
past decade, the Stop TB Partnership KOREA has connected and
cooperated with partners from all walks of life who share a
common goal in the fight against tuberculosis, contributing to
the fight against tuberculosis at home and abroad. However, we
believe the international community's expectations for Stop TB
Partnership KOREA are much higher as Korea has been considered
one of the major countries in the quarantine system and global
health. In addition, it is also our primary responsibility to
strengthen cooperation in the eradication of tuberculosis in
North Korea in preparation for the coming era of reunification.
It is in the midst of this domestic and international
infectious disease crisis that I was inaugurated as the Chairman
of the Cooperation Committee of the Stop TB Partnership KOREA to
publicize the importance of eradicating tuberculosis throughout
the world and further consolidate its position as a leading
country in the fight against tuberculosis internationally.
Bringing together the capabilities of various partners
and leading to close collaboration between the National Assembly
and government ministries, we will strengthen policy-level and
financial support for the Stop TB Partnership KOREA to contribute
to achieving the national TB control objectives and the End-TB
targets. We will also strive to make Korea take the lead in
fighting tuberculosis in North Korea and Asia as well as within
the country.

Korean National TB Association
Tuberculosis is now regarded as a disease that has disappeared.
Still, Korea is the country that came in the 1st place in the TB
incidence and the 3rd place in the TB mortality among OECD
economies, with 22,904 people ill with TB in 2021 alone.
Although it is a fact that the number of patients has
been declining every year, tuberculosis is still a severe disease
that threatens public health, with more than 4,000 deaths per day
worldwide and over 1,356 deaths domestically as of 2020.
According to the WHO announcement, furthermore, approximately 1.5
million people died of TB in 2020, ranking 13th in the world's
leading cause of death. Considering this reality, the World
Health Organization (WHO) and the STOP-TB Partnership announced
the 'End TB Strategy' to reduce TB mortality by 95% and TB
incidence by 90% by 2035 as the targets of SDGs Goal 3 'Good
Health and Well-Being'.
On the basis of these international TB elimination
targets, the Stop-TB Partnership KOREA has made efforts to
accomplish the End-TB goal, reinforcing Korea's role and
enhancing its status by conducting various domestic and
international cooperation activities. In addition, it has
contributed significantly to the national TB eradication program
by promoting projects linked to supporting TB education,
administration, and treatment for the vulnerable, which are in
the blind spot of TB management.
The Stop-TB Partnership Korea for a world without
tuberculosis,
your interest and participation create a
TB-free world.

Executive Director of
Stop TB
Partnership KOREA
We sincerely welcome visitors to our official website of the Stop
TB Partnership KOREA.
I, as the second executive
director of the Stop TB Partnership KOREA, am honored to be able
to work hard over the past decade to make Korea and the human
community free of tuberculosis.
The Stop TB
Partnership is a hosted international organization of the United
Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), striving to
eliminate tuberculosis worldwide since it started to be hosted
and administrated by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2001.
Given the nature of tuberculosis as a respiratory
infectious disease such as COVID-19, it is indisputable fact that
no one is safe until everyone is safe.
To leave
no one behind, the Stop TB Partnership Korea will be making
considerable efforts in the fight against tuberculosis.
We will be the “sound of the soundless” who cannot speak for
themselves, giving them hope for life along with tuberculosis
treatment.
Thank you.
